Minority Business Highlight: Sav J. Art

Sav J. Art, founded by Savannah Jacob, is an Indianapolis-based ceramic studio specializing in functional ceramics.

Jacob is a full-time ceramist who earned a BFA from Herron School of Art and Design. Her work is largely influenced by nature in Southern Indiana and highlights the intersection between ceramics and illustration, according to the website.

“Ceramic’s ability to fulfill the service of function is what initially captivated me,” Jacob said in her Artist Statement. “Growing up with little, manifested a need to create work that serves a utilitarian purpose, beyond the joy of viewing. I discovered that ceramics has the unique capacity for both function and beauty. In this way ceramics connects me to my childhood.”

Jacob incorporates the floral iconography seen within her own community into the surface design of her work including coffee mugs, vases, spoon rests, seasonal decor — and her newest Bates-Hendricks Community Garden mug collection released on Aug. 8.

Jacob is also one of the co-founders of Hepatica Pottery Collective, an all-women pottery collective that supports pottery collectors, arts supports and eco-conscious consumers. The collective features more than 20 local artists and operates out of the Contemporary Art Museum of Indianapolis (CAMi).

Sav J. Art is an Indianapolis-based creator who can be found at CAMi as well as pop-ups and markets around the city. For more information or to shop Jacob’s online collection, visit savjart.com. To get in contact, email savjacob@alumni.iu.edu
