Niyyah Coffee is the first deaf-owned coffee shop in Indianapolis.
Owned and operated by Talha Tufail, Niyyah Coffee is the fourth cafe belonging to the growing family-owned brand, which aims to create welcoming spaces for everyone. Niyyah also has locations in Fishers, Broad Ripple, McCordsville and another opening soon in Fort Wayne. However, the Mass Ave branch, which hosted a grand opening on June 27, was specifically designed with deaf and hard-of-hearing Hoosiers in mind.
“In Arabic, niyyah means ‘intention.’ It’s our intention to create a warm, welcoming atmosphere where people of all backgrounds can come together to enjoy a cup of coffee and good conversation,” the website states. “Every cup is a small ritual — sourced, crafted, and served with that same intention.”

Many of the employees at Niyyah’s Mass Ave location, including Tufail, are deaf and know sign language. Customers are encouraged to order by pointing to the menu, writing their order down or attempting to sign using the guide on the wall.
Across all cafe locations, Niyyah’s menu promises “coffee worth coming back for,” across a variety of seasonal and customer favorites, including cold brew and nitro, masala chai, matcha, sparkling and herbal teas, espresso and specialty lattes — such as the Brown Suga’ Shook, cinnamon roll, the Bumble, dark chocolate, lavender dreams, spiced Spanish latte. The cafe also specializes in milkshakes, hot chocolate, drip coffee, refreshers and a selection of food.
