Indiana’s first Black-owned deli expands to Broad Ripple

A historic milestone for local entrepreneurship has arrived in Broad Ripple.

Eve’s Garden Deli, recognized as Indiana’s very first Black-owned deli, celebrated its expansion with a brand-new storefront located at 916 East Westfield Blvd., near Guilford Avenue.

The brick-and-mortar shop marks a massive leap forward for owner Myka Gurvitz. What originally began as a home-based family project during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic quickly flourished into a successful catering operation, a mobile food truck and an initial physical location in Lawrence.

Driven by deep spiritual roots, Gurvitz derived the business’s moniker directly from the biblical figure Eve, noting that her faith entirely sustained her through the challenging transitions.

The daily operations at the Broad Ripple suite function as a family affair. Gurvitz works side by side with her children and extended family, setting a powerful blueprint for a community-centered work ethic. Beyond breaking regional industry barriers, the deli prioritizes a highly personalized environment for its neighborhood patrons. Inside the shop, visitors are invited to sign a permanent “wall of fame” to leave their own lasting mark on the space.

The menu delivers fully made-to-order comfort food, featuring gourmet sandwiches like “Uncle Rob’s Reuben Style,” hand-crafted pizzas, build-your-own salads, and their signature loaded “Silly Potato.” According to state economic development officials, the deli’s growth reflects a broader, accelerating trend of minority- and women-owned businesses anchoring themselves across Central Indiana.

For Gurvitz, the overarching mission of the expansion remains beautifully simple: to spread joy across Indy, one fresh meal at a time. Learn more at evesindy.com.
