Hair, heritage and happiness: Freedom Curls’ legacy of coils and confidence

For generations, hair has been more than just style in the Black community; it has been a statement of identity, a canvas of culture and, at times, a source of struggle. In Indianapolis, Freedom Curls salon is on a mission to ensure that the narrative ends in empowerment, transforming textured hair from a burden to be managed into a birthright to be celebrated.

Founded by LaQuita Burnett, a licensed cosmetologist passionate about curly and coily textures, Freedom Curls operates on a core mission: to liberate clients from the societal pressures and misconceptions surrounding their natural hair. The salon’s philosophy builds on the belief that understanding one’s hair is the first step toward truly loving oneself.

From  personal journey to professional mission

Burnett’s expertise is rooted in both professional training and personal understanding. After becoming licensed more than a decade ago, she dedicated herself to mastering the craft of trimming and styling textured hair, a specialization she found lacking in the market. Her commitment to education directly responds to her journey and the frustrations she witnesses in her community.

Specialized services for curly and coily hair

The salon caters exclusively to textured hair, specializing in types 2 through 4 on the curl spectrum. Its signature service is the “Freedom Method,” a comprehensive curly cut and style designed to enhance each client’s unique pattern for defined, hydrated and bouncy results.

The service menu is carefully crafted to meet specific needs, including:

  • The Freedom Method Cut & Style: A detailed process involving a dry cut for shape, a customized wash, and a precision wet cut.
  • Freedom Blowout & Press: A heat-styling service that incorporates protective treatments to minimize damage.
  • Specialized Color Services: Chemical services are performed with a focus on maintaining hair health.
  • Event & Bridal Styling: Expert styling for special occasions.

Freedom Curls has also developed a line of hair care products to help clients maintain their salon look. Products include a defining gel, curl cream, and moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.

Building a legacy of curls, coils and confidence with Freedom Curls

Burnett’s work goes beyond the styling chair; she is fostering a culture of conviction. By teaching clients how to care for their hair, she is giving them the freedom and the power to wear their natural texture with pride.

Freedom Curls is located at 6233 Carrollton Avenue. The business is open daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. Contact them at 317-658-0801.
