Felege Hiywot Center (FHC), whose name means “looking for direction to life” in Amharic, empowers Indianapolis youth through experiential education and community service.
Founded by Director Aster Bekele, the organization blends Ethiopian community values with local outreach.
FHC’s mission focuses on providing STEAM education and youth employment opportunities. Its vision, rooted in Matthew 25:40, emphasizes serving “the least of these” as an expression of Christian faith. Programs aim to develop responsible, self-sufficient community members.
Key initiatives of FHC include:
- Youth Farm Initiative: Teaches practical agriculture, teamwork and entrepreneurship through growing and selling crops.
- Life Skills Training: Covers real-world business principles and community service.
- These programs foster self-sufficiency, responsibility and active citizenship among participants.
Director Aster Bekele launched FHC after tutoring Indianapolis children in 1975. Her experience bridging her Ethiopian heritage with local needs inspired the center’s dual focus: addressing local challenges while raising awareness about global disparities.
